The Unlifer’s Guide to Living: 34 Ways to Achieve Your Goals, Dreams, and Anything Else

  1. Dare to dream crazy. Everyone has a dream or purpose for their life. Go find it. Whatever it is, or whatever you decide, make sure it’s crazy. Dream up the most ridiculous thing you can and be crazy enough to accomplish those dreams.
  2. Believe you can fly. If you’re going to finally accomplish your wildest dreams, you’re going to have to be crazy enough to believe in yourself. This takes courage because this world convinces us that winning the lottery is the only way you can make a difference. So, boost your self-confidence.
  3. Commit yourself. No, not to an insane asylum. Commit to accomplishing your dreams. Make an inward commitment to yourself that this is what you want to do. This takes tons of courage, but it’s still only a decision. If you have to, write it down, tell someone, or make a promise to yourself. Whatever you have to do, decide to go into it 100%.
  4. Burn bridges! …with anything and everything that’s holding you back. Everyone has their vices: a video game that wastes your time or a food that prevents your fitness goals. Throw them out until you have control of your life again. If you haven’t done this yet,
  5. Find a fearless leader (or mentor). You’re going to need some advice along the way from someone who has accomplished what you want in life. This person is someone you look up to, someone who has done what you want to accomplish, and someone who you believe in. Even if you don’t know them personally, you can still learn how they accomplished their dreams.
  6. Write down your ridiculous goals. No matter how big or small, write them down. Goals aren’t just big things in the sky like, “become wealthy.” They can be as simple as, “read a book” or “visit friends more often”. Make smart and achievable goals with steps in between each one by starting small and moving up to the bigger things. Remember that achieving goals takes time, but writing them down so you don’t forget only takes a few seconds.
  7. Pen a mission statement or manifesto. What do you stand for? Who are you? Write these down so you can recall why you’re doing what you’re doing. Art of Manliness has a great post about writing a Manifesto.
  8. Flaunt your progress. Tell a friend. Tell Facebook or Twitter. Share it with the world. You’re taking a stand for who you want to be. This will help you stay accountable.
  9. Digest a book. The absolute best way to learn how to achieve you dreams is to learn from those who have already done it. Find out who has accomplished what you want to accomplish and learn from them!
  10. Rock a playlist. You’re going to need inspiration along the way. When I’m feeling a little down about myself, I go back and listen to some of my favorite inspirational songs. They cheer me up and inspire me to continue.
  11. Remind yourself to remember. Now that you’ve decided on your dreams, put it in places you can’t forget. For example, I use my phone and computer wallpaper to remind me everyday why I’m doing what I’m doing. Put a picture on your bathroom mirror so you think about it every morning when you brush your teeth. Be creative.
  12. Start a blog. I constantly reiterate that people can achieve their goals by helping others achieve theirs. A blog might be a way for you to share what you’re good at while also helping you achieve your goals. Corbett Barr runs a fantastic blog start-up program called Start A Blog That Matters (if you check it out, it would help me out if you use my link).
  13. Simplify. Start removing the things in your life that don’t matter or you don’t need. Leo Babauta of Zen Habits has a fantastic post on simplifying your life.
  14. Stretch your comfort zone. This helps you grow, helps you try new things, and gets you discovering the world and putting yourself out there instead of stagnating. It builds confidence and helps you accomplish goals easier.
  15. Mess stuff up. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes! It’s totally cool. Just be prepared to apologize if you need to. If you’re afraid of making mistakes, you’ll live your life walking on egg shells. Get out there and smash some eggs. Wait… what?
  16. Don’t let people should on you! That’s right. Don’t let other people control you by telling you what you should and shouldn’t do. You have to make your own decisions and do what you think is right. Stand up for yourself and take control of your own life.
  17. Ignore the naysayers. Much like not letting people control you, you must also ignore the Negative Nancys out there. Some people aren’t happy no matter what you do and will put you down because they don’t have the courage to do what you’re doing. Ignore them.
  18. Forgive people. Whether people apologize or not for hurting you, forgiveness is required. If you can’t forgive, then you’re unintentionally letting those who hurt you, control you. Forgiveness is for the person forgiving, not the person being forgiven. Learn to forgive and you’ll make it far.
  19. Enjoy the journey. It might go without saying, but you enjoy adventure! Sometimes I get so caught up with the destination or the goal that I don’t enjoy the journey there. Life is a narrow path, not a destination.
  20. Make fun of yourself. Don’t take yourself too seriously. You’re gonna have to laugh at yourself because you’re gonna do some dumb things. Heck, I do dumb things on a daily basis. Then I tell people and we laugh about it. Learn to laugh at yourself!
  21. Learn how to learn faster. Chances are, you’re going to need to learn a few things along the way. In fact, you’re probably going to need to learn a lot of things you’ve never done before. The faster you learn how to learn, the faster you meet your goals.
  22. Reevaluate, readjust. Are you doing so much that you’re burning out? Or not doing enough and not accomplishing your goals? You’re going to need to readjust your efforts and goals until you reach a happy medium that you’re comfortable with.
  23. Believe in YOU. First thing first: you can change the world. If you don’t believe you can do anything, you’ll never put your heart into it. You need to learn to believe that you can do this. Listen to what Ira Glass has to say about taste and becoming good at things. His video always helps me restore belief in my abilities.
  24. Give back. Don’t be selfish. Give what you can to those in need. Not just money, but your time too. Many of the greatest minds have said that it’s much easier to make money when you’re generous with it. I think this applies to anything.
  25. Make time for yourself. Take a full day off once a week. It doesn’t matter what day, but one day a week should be reserved for you, your family, and your friends. Even God took the 7th day off.
  26. Become an optimist. I’m a hopeless optimist. Even when someone would otherwise see something as otherwise lost, I see a glimmer of hope. I think this has given me the persistence to continue when others wouldn’t. Learn to stay optimistic!
  27. Take a chance on the impossible. There’s going to come times where you have to let go and take a leap of faith. Joel Runyon of The Impossible HQ inspires people to do the impossible on a regular basis.
  28. Set a due date. Along the way, you’ve pushed aside something important for weeks or months, maybe even years. Put a due date on it. Finally get that task done that’s been haunting you.
  29. Eliminate excuses forever. There’s nothing worse for you than coming up with excuses. I wasted years of my life because I would excuse myself from doing something on a regular basis. This leads to procrastination, which is the antithesis of accomplishing dreams.
  30. Save your money. In other words, be smart with your money. In fact, be creative. I could spend hours giving you advice on money and there’s many schools of thought in that regard. Bottom line: save for emergencies and save for the future.
  31. Smile. This isn’t that hard is it? Whether you’re actually happy or you’re in a rut, it’s proven that smiling helps lighten your mood. Don’t believe me? Check out some of the benefits of smiling.
  32. Make new habits. Ever read The Power of Habit? Steve Kamb of Nerd Fitness has a fantastic post about habit-making. Make habits that take you closer to your goals.
  33. Love people. I call this the greatest lifehack of all time. This will take you further than anything else in life. It’s intrinsically necessary, it’s selfless, and it’s fulfilling.
  34. Persevere! Beyond all else, keep going. Don’t quit. If you continue, you will learn. If you quit, you’ll never know what you were capable of if you didn’t quit. Never give up, because even the smallest step forward is still progress.

    Great list, Loren. We would all be better human beings just by taking a few of these and doing them daily.
    I love #1. I keep telling myself, one persons “crazy” is another persons “normal.” Without crazy dreamers, we wouldn’t have some of the greatest things in the world.
    This post is great encouragement for me today.
